Halloween Sewing Projects Round Up

Can you believe October is almost halfway over already?! The weather here finally, FINALLY turned toward fall this weekend, and we got out to do some apple picking, sweater wearing, and pumpkin spying, and it felt great. I hope you’re enjoying some lovely weather wherever you are as well!

All the cool breezes and pumpkins popping up on porches got me in the mood to put out my Halloween decorations, which of course also got me in the mood for some Halloween sewing. I’m sure I’m not the only one, so I’m here for a little Halloween project round up! Let’s get started!

There are so many cute Halloween fabrics available these days, and I wanted to create a pattern that would let me use as many of them as possible. While I've seen a ton of pumpkin blocks over the years, scrappy witches had yet to have their day in the sun (err...night under the moon?), so I decided to put an end to that. The result is the One Scrappy Witch block pattern, a simple and fun addition to your Halloween sewing repertoire. I think you’ll find it’s hard to make just one of these blocks.

The pattern includes two block sizes — 12 ½” and 18 ½” square (unfinished) — so you can choose the size that works for your needs. This blog post includes lots of ideas, speaking of which…

The 12.5” block in the One Scrappy Witch block pattern is perfect for a candy tote for trick-or-treating! This free tutorial shows you how to make your own!

Next, check out my free One Scrappy Pumpkin block tutorial to keep the scrappy sewing going! This simple block combines squares and HSTs to create a super-size 18.5” block. Like the One Scrappy Witch block, this pumpkin is perfect for inserting into all your Halloween quilts, pillows, or wall hangings.

Need an idea for how to do just that? After seeing a few other scrappy spooky-themed blocks pop up, I started brainstorming my own scrappy sampler Halloween quilt. This free quilt layout uses the One Scrappy Witch and One Scrappy Pumpkin blocks, along with several other free or very inexpensive patterns from other modern quilt designers to create a fun holiday quilt perfect for highlighting your favorite Halloween fabrics. Time to start planning!

Finally, add a little fun to your coffee or dining-room table with the free “BOO!” Blocks pattern. The pattern walks you through making the individual blocks and then provides basic instructions for turning them into coasters (like mine!) or a table runner, but don’t let your imagination or creativity stop there. These would be so cute incorporated into the sampler quilt above!

So, what’s on your Halloween sewing wish list?
