Celebrate the Holidays with One Scrappy Santa!

With Halloween in our rearview mirror, I’m so excited to show you my newest pattern, just in time for some quick and easy holiday sewing: meet One Scrappy Santa, my first holiday-inspired quilt pattern! After creating my One Scrappy Witch block for Halloween last year, I fell in love with using half-rectangle triangles to create the hat and then went wild over the idea of using rectangles for a patchwork background (versus the typical squares) to highlight a giant Santa hat. Choose an ombré or scrappy version for a Throw quilt and/or coordinating pillow. You won’t regret making both.

The pattern includes full instructions for a Throw quilt (64" x 67") and Pillow (18" x 18") in two versions: Ombré and Scrappy. With more cutting diagrams than you can imagine, you’ll have all the info you need to create a quilt or pillow in either version (yardage and fat quarter friendly / scrappy options) or a matching ombré quilt and pillow set, like the one I made shown above!

In this post, I’m going to focus on the ombré quilt. Stay tuned for upcoming posts highlighting the pillow and scrappy quilt!

The cover quilt is the Ombré version of the Throw size quilt. I used a variety of colors from V and Co.’s Ombré Flurries* collection:

(Tip: This line would also look amazing in the scrappy version of the quilt. Check out the fat quarter bundle here!)

Lots of shops are carrying the Ombré Flurries collection, so if the links above are sold out, check out Hawthorne Threads, Stash Fabrics, or Fort Worth Fabric Studio.

The backing is Fly in Shell from Melody Miller's Rise collection.

There are now a number of ombré fabric collections on the market (including several additional designs by Vanessa Christenson of V and Co. — seen here*, here, and here — as well as other designers), any of which would make short work of creating the ombré effect shown in the cover quilt with just a few fabrics.

The fabric requirements and cutting instructions for the ombré version of this design are written with these types of fabrics in mind, but the pattern also includes info on how to create an ombré look with more "standard" fabrics.

The cover quilt was longarm quilted by Lilo Whitener-Fey of Trace Creek Quilting. The quilting pantograph is Midnight Sparkle by Kristin Hoftyzer, and I absolutely adore it on this quilt. Combined with the silver (but not metallic) thread Lilo suggested, it sparkles and gives the best wintry vibe.

I used more of the red ombré fabrics for the binding and topped it off with some big-stitch binding using my favorite white sashiko thread.* I’ll be posting a video very soon about my big-stitch binding technique, so keep your eyes peeled. I know several of you have been asking for it!

I have so much more to share about this fun new pattern, but if you can’t wait to get started on your own version this weekend, you can grab your copy of the pattern HERE!
