The Scrappiest One Scrappy Santa

You’ve seen the ombré quilt version of One Scrappy Santa, as well as its coordinating pillow, so now it’s time for all the details on the scrappy sample quilt! I’ll admit that when I designed this pattern, I was originally planning on only doing the ombré version, but the more I worked on it, the more I knew there had to be a version that utilized precuts and/or scraps, and I’m so glad I did it.

As I mentioned in the release blog post, the pattern includes full instructions for a Throw quilt (64" x 67") and Pillow (18" x 18") in two versions: Ombré and Scrappy. You can make them in any combination you like, and the pattern includes special cutting instructions if you want to make a coordinating ombré quilt and pillow set. But if you’ve been holding on to that special holiday fat-quarter bundle waiting for the right project, then the scrappy version is for you!

For the scrappy sample quilt, I used a fat-quarter bundle of Giucy Giuce’s Natale collection. I just love Giuseppe’s fabrics, and I really appreciate what a contrast this color scheme provides to the look of the ombré cover quilt. The colors in the bundle also broke down perfectly for the fabric requirements, which call for 13 FQs for the background and 4 FQs for the red hat body. You can see the ones I used for the quilt top below.

The pattern includes full instructions and cutting diagrams for making the most of your FQs, as well as a “total pieces” list if you’re using actual scraps. You could really go on a deep dive through your holiday scraps to make this one!

For the quilting, I once again called on my longarmer extraordinaire, Lilo Whitener-Fey of Trace Creek Quilting. She helped me choose the Frost pantograph by Patricia Ritter and Leisha Farnsworth, which I just love. At this scale, it brings the perfect snowflake motif without being too dense or distracting. I also love how the mustard gold thread pops off all the scrappy fabrics.

When I got to the binding, I decided to use two of the stripes from the FQ bundle. I used the trick for getting yards of bias binding out of a FQ to get all I needed from two FQs! But if you follow my lead, be sure to pay more attention to the direction of the stripes than I did when cutting: you can see the stripes in half my binding are running a different direction that in the other half, ha! With all this scrappy goodness to distract you, I don’t think it’s too obvious.

I used up the remaining FQs from the bundle, along with some yardage from my stash, to make a scrappy backing. They can definitely be more work, but they’re always fun to look at, and there is something really rewarding about using up every inch of fabric. The bigger piece of yardage along the bottom of the backing is Good Tidings in Teal from the Cheer & Merriment collection by Fancy That Design House & Co.
