Quilt Block Mania - June 2022: Deco Oyster Block

Hello, June Quilt Block Mania-ers! Fulling embracing the start of summer around here, this month’s theme was “Under the Sea,” a classic. In addition to my block, you can download blocks from a great group of designers for free* and get started making right away. You’ll find a photo of all the blocks and links to the other designers at the bottom of the post, but first, let me introduce you to my Deco Oyster block!

Deco Oyster block

The Deco Oyster Block stemmed from an idea to create a more geometrical oyster shell. When I squared off the edges, the shell had a distinctly Art Deco vibe, which I really loved. It’s simple, stylish, and a look all its own, and I’m all here for it. I hope you love it, too! I could envision a whole undersea world of Art Deco creatures.

The Deco Oyster block pdf includes paper-piecing templates to make a single 12.5” block (finishes at 12”). I recommend using a darker shade of the same hue for the bottom part of the shell to create a shadowed effect. And it would be so cute to use a metallic fabric for the pearl to create its sheen. For the background, it’s best to use a solid or non-directional small print that reads as a solid.

You could take this block into so many fun color schemes. Think a “classic” Art Deco palette of cream, gold, and navy (imagine that twinkly metallic pearl in the middle!) or go full-on beachy vibe with bright tropical colors.

You can now find the Deco Oyster block in my shop for just $3! And stay tuned for more free Quilt Block Mania blocks in future months. Signing up for my newsletter is the best way to stay informed when new blocks and patterns arrive. I only send it about once a month, and it’s always chocked full of fun new things. Give it a try!
